No. 319,028 Clairns priority, application Sweden, June 12, 1963, 6,463/ 63 2 Claims. (Cl. 242-72) This invention has reference to an improved drive spindle for gripping winding sleeves for paper rolls etc. which is provided with expanding means adapted to create suflicient friction between the spindle and the sleeve to drive the latter along with the rotation of the spindle.
In an earlier known construction the expansion means comprises a hose put over an inner shaft of the drive spindle and tightened with the ends against the shaft. The latter is provided with a device for feeding compressed air into the space between the hose and the shaft and the hose is enclosed in a cylindrical expansion device with a number of longitudinally extending rails which are interconnected at the ends where they also are carried by the shaft. When the hose is filled with compressed air, the rails are at their central portion bent outwards to form arcs. This device has turned out to have a very good function when the stresses on the drive spindle do not exceed a certain value. However, in case the paper roll is very heavy, the bending out of the rails will be unequal which causes an eccentricity.
The object of the present invention is to eliminate this drawback. According to the invention the expanding means comprise hoses inserted each in a longitudinal notch in the shaft, said noses being connected to a compressed air source and each being adapted, when blown up, to move a pressing element in the notch outside the hose radially outwards so that its radially outer border, serving as a catching border, will extend outside the periphery of the spindle.
The blowing up of the hoses will be absolutely uniform and the hoses will have a considerable carrying capacity. There cannot occur any uneven loading even with very great paper rolls.
The separate hoses according to the invention may be pumped to a considerably higher pressure than the single hose in the above recited embodirnent of a drive spindle.
The invention will now be elucidated with reference to the accompanying drawings, in Which:
FIG. 1 shows a longitudinal section through a drive spindle according to the invention,
FIG. 2 is a side elevation of a drive spindle with only one carrying trunnion,
FIG. 3 shows on an enlarged scale a longitudinal section through a portion of the drive spindle according to FIG. 1 at one end of the same, and
IFIG. 4 shows a cross section through the spindle on the line IV-IV in FIG. 1.
According to the embodiment shown in FIGS. 1, 3 and 4 the -drive spindle comprises an uninterrupted carrying shaft 1, the two ends 2 of which serve as carrying trunnions. The shaft 1 is provided with longitudinal notches i from said bore 8 to one end of each one of the notches 3. The outer end of the bore 8 is provided with a device 10 through which compressed air can Ibe forced into the spindle.
In each one of the notches 3 there is, inside the rails 5, arranged a hose 11 of rubber or a similar elastic material. At one end the hoses 11 a-re provided with a nipple 12 engaging a corresponding radial channel '9 through which the bore 8 communicates with the interior of the corresponding hose '11. On the nipple 12 there is arranged a hose piece -13 serving as a lip tightening, the radially inner free end 14 of said hose piece 13 being pressed against the wall of said bore 9 by the air pressure in the same.
When a paste board sleeve 21 has been put on the drive spindle the device l10 is connected to a source of compressed air (not shown). The hoses are blown up uniformly and the rails 5 are forced radially outwards while clamping the sleeve 21 strictly concentrically. By d-riving the spindle, the paper web is then wound on the sleeve 21.
The drive spindle shown in FIG. 2 corresponds constructively in all essential parts to the embodiment shown in the aforegoing. The carrying shaft 2', however, is in this case provided with only one shaft trunnon. This drive spindle is intended to -be used for rather short paper rolls 23.
(Fhe shown and described embodments are to be regarded as examples only and the drive spindle may be constructively modified in many ways within the scope of the appended claims. The number of rails 5, notches 3 and hoses 1'1 in the drive spindle is independent of the invention. However, the minimum number is three. Of course, other material than paper may be wound on the drive spindle. Instead of rails v5 it is possible to use other pressure elements which by the hoses 11 are moved radially outwards. As examples may -be mentioned pistons radially movable in bores.
iWhat we claim is:
1. A drive spindle for use with a winding sleeve for a paper roll or the like, which comprises a carrying shaft having its central portion greater in diameter than its two end portions, a plurality of circumferentially spaced notches extending longitudinally for the full length of said central portion, an elongated pressing element received in each notch for radial movement into and out of gripping engagement with a winding sleeve, an elongated fluid-pressure inflatable member disposed in each notch radially inwardly of the associated pressing element, the length of each inflatable member being such that it extends beyond the central portion onto the end portions of said carrying shaft, an axial bore extending into one end portion of said carrying shaft, a plurality of channels extending from the inner end of said axial -bore radially -outwardly through said one end portion, there being one such radial channel for each of said notches, a nipple fitted in one end of each inflatable member with its stem extending through said inflatable member into the correspondng radial channel, the fluid passage through said nipple being so formed that incomng pressure fluid is di-rected longitudinally into said inflatable member toward its other end, means to circumferentially clamp the respective ends of said infiatable members against the corresponding end portions of said carrying shaft, the clamping means for said one end of said in- 3 4 flatable members overlying the nipples in said inflatable References Cited by the Examiner members and thereby holding said nipples in place in the UNITED STATES PATENTS respective radi-al channels, and a sleeve fitted over each end portion of said carrying shaft to enclose the respec- 2312913 2/43 Wallacetive ends 'of said inflatable members and the respective 5 3,006 152 10/61 Rusche 242 72 clamping means.
2. A drive spindle according to claim 1, which includes v FOREIGN PATENTS a flexible coupling attached to the inner end of each nipple 1254333 1/ 61 Francestem and adapted to be expanded |by the incoming pressure fluid into tight engagement With the corresponding 10 MERVIN STEIN: Pr'mary Exfllmmefradial channel.
