Abstract

1,253,360. Insulators. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CABLES Ltd. 27 Feb., 1969 [28 Feb., 1968], No. 9673/68. Heading H2C. A tubular insulator is filled by a multiplicity of insulating pellets which are hollow (i.e. filled only with a gas) or of foamed material embedded in a flexible or elastomeric matrix. As shown, the insulator consists of a glass-fibre core 1 surrounded by a tube 2 carrying sheds 3, the annular space between the core and the tube being filled with pellets (5) (Fig. 2, not shown) of closed-cell foamed polyurethane embedded in a matrix (6) of a flexibilized cycloaliphatic epoxy resin or an elastomer. The pellets may have a spherical, spheroidal or prismatic shape and are able to be compressed volumetrically and/or distorted in any direction to allow the filling to accommodate differential thermal expansion or contraction. The filling may be formed by introducing the pellets into the space, and adding a liquid composition forming the matrix after evacuating the space or alternatively a mixture of the two could be introduced into the space under vacuum. Application of pressure may be necessary for the hardening of liquid composition.
