Abstract

1,053,591. Storing liquefied gases. GAZ DE FRANCE-SERVICE NATIONAL. Aug. 28, 1964 [Aug. 30, 1963], No. 35379/64. Heading F4P. A tank for storing liquefied gas at substantially atmospheric pressure, Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown) comprises a prestressed reinforced concrete enclosure having a lining 16 of heat insulating material protected by a fluid impervious liner 18. The concrete enclosure comprises a prestressed base 10 on which is mounted a cylindrical skirt 12 formed from prefabricated panels around which is wound a radially prestressing steel cable 22 covered by a sheath of mortar 24. A metal or concrete roof 14 is supported on the skirt 12. The skirt 12 is longitudinally prestressed by tie rods and is provided with upper and lower rings 30, 34 forming bearing surfaces for rings 28, 36 secured respectively to the roof 14 and the base 10. To seal the roof 14 and the base 10 to the skirt 12 while allowing for relative expansion and contraction therebetween, a pair of stainless steel or copper U-shaped members 32, 38 are connected between the rings 28, 30 and 34, 36. The U-shaped members are located in a cavity in the lining 16 containing compressed glass wool, wadding or expanded plastics 31, 37. The lining 16 is of expanded plastics material such as sealed cell polyurethane or epoxy resin foams and is either moulded in position or sprayed in layers on to the enclosure 10, 12, 14. The final layers are preferably reinforced with expanded stainless steel or aluminium alloy, a meshwork of wires, or a glass fibre fabric. The fluid impervious linen 18 is fabricated from welded sheets of composite material comprising a cotton fabric on a fabric made of polypropylene or glass fibres covered by a layer of polyethylene or polypropylene in which is disposed an aluminium or copper sheet. The liner 18 has secured thereto rings which engage screw eyes provided in blocks anchored in the lining 16 (Fig. 5, not shown).
