Abstract

1,250,856. Cigarette-making machines. J. L. PAYNTER. 18 March, 1970, No. 13031/70. Heading A2C. A manually-operated machine for making filter cigarettes comprises a housing composed of parts 11, 12 joined together by screws in holes 14, 15 and recessed to provide a chamber 16 for a slide 24 which has projections 26 extending through a slot 27. The slide has a slot 34 to receive a pin 49 which is connected by links 47 and a pin 48 to a lever 39 pivotally mounted on the housing by a pin 43 which passes through holes 41 in the lever and through a hole 46 in a block 44 fastened to the part 12. The arrangement is such that upward movement of the free end of the lever 39 raises the slide 24 to enable a charge of loose tobacco to be inserted through a slot 17 in the part 11. A filter receiver 18 is secured at either end of the slot 17, as shown at the end 20, and has a partition 22 to separate the tobacco charge from the filter. When the free end of the lever 39 is depressed the slide 24, which has a slot 28 to pass over the partition 22, urges the filter and tobacco downwardly below the partition 22 to compress the tobacco on a plunger 61 which has an upwardly-open portion 62 of arcuate cross-section, the linkage 39, 47, 48, 49 passing through an over-centre position so that the slide is withdrawn slightly at the end of the movement of the lever 39. A lever 67 pivotally connected by a pin 68 to a projection 65 on the plunger is then operated to disengage a lock 71, 72 and slide the plunger to the right to convey the tobacco and filter through a tubular nozzle 57 located in a slot 55 into a paper wrapper tube which has been placed over the end of the nozzle 57. The portion 62 of the plunger 61 may have inner projections to assist the conveyance of the tobacco. Modifications are described in which the means for operating the slide 24 comprises a rotary cam, an eccentric, or a crank and curved link arrangement, and a gripper is provided for holding the paper tube on the nozzle 57.
