Abstract

1,250,480. Dry-cleaning. M. R. BURGER. 25 Nov., 1968 [7 March, 1968], No. 11187/68. Heading D1A. When, after the dry-cleaning of a batch of textiles, the bulk of the solvent has been removed as liquid, the remaining solvent is evaporated and removed from the cleaning chamber 100 after which it is in succession compressed, cooled and expanded and thus condensed. Solvent is supplied from tank 102 to chamber 100 to a level determined by one of the devices 104a or 104b, the textiles being held in a perforated rotary drum within chamber 100. The solvent is then circulated by pump 106 through filter 110, built up from powder before cleaning commences, chamber 100 and button trap 108. The flow is restricted to produce cooling either by valve V6 or an orifice at the pump outlet. After cleaning, chamber 100 is drained and further liquid is extracted by centrifuging. The solvent/air mixture in chamber 100 is then removed by compressor 114 which delivers it through heat exchanger 118 and expansion orifice 121 e.g. a length of narrow pipe ,to tank 102 or to a chamber leading to tank. 102 where the solvent condenses. The air returns to chamber 100 through heater 122. Heat exchanger 118 is a finned pipe coil air cooled by fan 126. Preceding orifice 121 is a valve 120 which does not open below a prearranged minimum pressure to ensure sufficient cooling. During solvent recovery, alternating centrifuging and low speed rotation may be repeated. Sludge from the filter 110 may be dumped in still 130 where the solvent is recovered. Monofluorotrichloromethane (CFCl 3 ) is preferred as solvent but monofluorodichloromethane (CHFCl 2 ) and trinuorotrichloroethane (CFCl 2 -CF 2 Cl) may be used.
