Abstract
1321448 Distillation apparatus of the vapour compression type; desalination of water AUSCOTENG PTY Ltd 10 Sept 1970 [11 Sept 1969] 43330/70 Heading BIB Saline water is desalinated by distillation in an apparatus wherein the vapour evolved in an evaporator 1 is compressed by blower 13 and then condensed in condenser 2 which is disposed in the water-space of the evaporator, a water-sealed, gear-type vacuum pump 10 withdraws condensate (i.e. desalinated water) and air from the condenser, and another watersealed, gear-type vacuum-pump 8 removes residual dense brine and air from the evaporator. The vacuum maintained in the evaporator is such that the water boils at temperatures no greater than ambient temperature. The water to be desalinated (raw brine) flows from tank 18 through heatexchanger 3 wherein the raw brine is preheated by the dense brine and product water; the raw brine then flows through line 20 and heat-exchangers 4, 5 to air-separation chamber 6 which is connected to vacuum pump 8 via line 7. The preheated and partially deaerated raw brine then enters evaporator 1, the flow rate being controlled by valve 14 in relation to the vacuum existing in evaporator 1.
