Abstract
1,250,114. Tubular heat exchangers. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 4 Feb., 1970 [18 Feb., 1969], No. 8645/69. Heading F4S. In a heat exchanger comprising a plurality of arrays of heat transfer units 31 arranged one above another in a chamber 1, the units in each array extend radially between one or more distribution manifolds 15 and a common collection manifold 3. Each heat transfer unit 31 comprises a plurality of spaced apart small bore tubes (of diameter #0À125 in.) extending between tube plates held in annular flanges 35 and 37. The tubes 33 in each unit are surrounded by a sleeve 39 to which a frusto conical wall is 41 secured by annular pressure seals 43; the wall 41 defines annular compartments 51, 53. As shown cold gas to be heated enters a circular toroidal inlet manifold 11, which in turn communicates with the upper ends of circumferentially spaced vertical distribution manifolds 15, and flows through the tubes 33 into the manifold 3 and out through a port 47. Heating gas entering through inlet port 49 flows upwards through compartment 51, laterally, in counter current to the flow of gas to be heated, through the passages enclosed by the sleeves 39 into compartment 53, to finally leave through outlet port 55. The units 31 can be withdrawn for replacement or repair through a flange cover plate 9. In an alternative embodiment (Figs. 4 and 5, not shown) wherein water is used to cool a gas, the heat transfer units extend between annular distribution and collection manifolds (67, 63), the water being passed through the tubes.
