Abstract

1,249,979. Tensioning device; tensioning bolts. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. 11 Feb., 1969, [20 Dec., 1967], No. 57970/67. Headings F2G and F2H. A tensioning device for an elongated member such as a threaded bolt 13, stud, rod on a rolled, drawn, extruded or forged metallic member comprises a housing 1 provided with a stepped bore there being seated on at least some of the shoulders 7 formed by the stepped bore housing partitions 6 sealed to the bore walls. The device is further provided with a stepped shaft 2 having at least a plurality of pistons 3 seated against some of the shoulders 4 formed by the stepping of the shaft. The partitions 6 and pistons 3 are in pairs such that they define therebetween fluid tight annular chambers 30 having pressure fluid inlets 22. The device further comprises a means for co-axially securing the shaft 2 to the elongated member. In the construction shown the other annular chambers 26 defined between the partitions 6 and pistons 3 are replied to atmosphere and the searing means consists of a coupling nut 12. The shaft 2 is formed with an axial bore 31 through which a rod 32 extends to engage the end of the elongated member. By measuring the distance travelled by the outer end of the rod 32 during tensioning the elongation of the elongated member is ascertained. When a bolt 13 is tensioned the nut 20 thereof is turned within the device by a nut turning collar 21 and a collar bar 27 which extends through an arcuate slot 28. The shaft 2 and housing 1 may comprise a plurality of easily disconnectible sections. The device for screwing the shaft to the elongated member may comprise shaped collets seated in grooves in the elongated member or wedges passing through preformed holes in the elongated member.
