Abstract
1,248,499. Blowout preventer for wells. HYDRIL CO. 19 Dec., 1969 [23 Dec., 1968], No. 62144/69. Heading E1F. A blowout preventer of the type having a housing 11 connectible in an underwater wellhead stack, an inwardly constrictable packer annulus P, an annular actuator 39 movable upwardly to constrict the packer, and a first and second chambers 47 and 48 arranged to receive pressure fluid respectively to urge the actuator to open or close the packer, is provided with a third chamber 82 to receive control fluid to urge the actuator upwardly to at least partly counterbalance the effect on the packer and actuator of the static head of pressure in passage 85. Pressure in chamber 82 may be controlled by regulator 96 in response to pressure sensed through line 110 in .passage 85.
