Abstract
1,273,946. Wells &c. HYDRIL CO. 19 April, 1971 [19 March, 1970], No. 24610/71. Heading E1F. A well blowout preventer 10 preferably of the type where contraction of a packer annulus 55 (Fig. 2) is produced by axial movement of a piston 39, has a pressure relief valve 114 (Fig. 3) connecting the upper and lower sides of the piston, so that when a joint 110 or other enlargement of a drill string 111 enters the packer, the annulus P can expand to accommodate it, the excess pressure beneath the piston being relieved by the valve 114. The preventer is operated by gas pressure from an accumulator 90, and pressure regulator 91, and the pressure relief valve 114 comprises a ball biassed against a valve seat by a spring and a piston'subjected to control pressure through the line 133 leading to an accumulator 128 which is supplied from the pressure regulator outlet. The pressure relief valve may alternatively be located in the preventer housing (Fig. 6, not shown) or in the piston 39 (Fig. 11 not shown). In another embodiment (not shown), the valve 114, accumulator 128 and non-return valve 131 (respectively referenced 260, 263 and 262 in Fig. 12) are in a common housing. The preventer actuator may have an additional pressure chamber 82 (Fig. 2), which may also be connected to a pressure relief valve, 170 (Fig. 3).
