Abstract

1,249,614. Wells. HYDRIL CO. 10 Feb., 1970 [20 Feb., 1969], No. 6432/70. Heading E1F. [Also in Division F2] A well blowout prevention apparatus has a packer annulus P and a piston actuator 39 - for example generally of the type disclosed in Specification 1,248,499, and also includes a plug 131 having a through opening 133 and rotatable to bring the opening into and out of registration with passage 134 extending through the packer annulus, the housing 30 of the apparatus on the side of the plug remote from the packer annulus being removable to provide access to the plug. The plug is rotated by racks 175 and 176 connected to pistons and engaging a pinion 170 on shaft 135 of the plug. Surrounding the plug are upper and lower elastomeric sealing members 146, 147. Metallic seal rings 150, 151 are carried by the sealing members. An O- ring 160, 161 surrounds each sleeve 137, 138 in which shafts 135, 136 of the plug rotate and is connected to an O-ring 162 surrounding the plug at the junction between the sealing members. As shown the plane of O-ring 162 is perpendicular to the axis of passage 134, but may be at an angle thereto (Fig. 8) so that as the plug' opens or closes the ring is not in direct communication with passage 134. The apparatus may be positioned in a subaqueous wellhead stack.
