[Also in Division C6] The propagation of micro-organisms is conducted in an apparatus consisting essentially of two chambers a and b 1 Figs. 2 to 5, through which the culture liquid is continuously circulated in the indicated directions by the injection of gas through line 1, of sufficient intensity to impart to the ascending liquid a velocity of between 0.5 to 2 metres/sec, assisted by a helix 5. Culture liquid is admitted through line 2 and withdrawn from line 3, and the temperature of the circulating body of liquid is maintained by a heat exchanger 4. Privileged flow in the descending liquid in chamber b may be prevented by providing a closed cylinder 10, Fig. 2, positioned as shown, or a countercurrent of gas within an open cylinder 10, Fig. 4. Several chambers a may be used in conjunction with a single chamber b. The ratio of the cross-sectional area(s) of the chamber(s) a to that of the chamber b should lie between 0.05 to 0.8. In the case of anaerobic fermentation, a portion of the gas generated by the fermentation process may be collected at the top of the chambers and recompressed for subsequent recycling.
