Abstract
The installation comprises a vertical reaction chamber in which mixed air and culture medium are contacted in a rising current. The reaction chamber has a cooling circuit to transfer heat away from the reaction zone. The reaction chamber is connected top and bottom to corresp. top and bottom of a vertical separator vessel which has an internal foam dissipator, a gas exhaust vent and a prod. outlet. The separator vessel has an auxiliary contacting zone in which open air pipes extend upwards from an air chest. Mixed air and culture medium are contacted in a rising current in the auxiliary contacting zone of the separator located below the sepg. zone. In the separator, the mixt. of air and culture medium pref. rise in vertical, open-topped pipes each with an air jet projecting up the open lower end of the pipe. The vertical pipes are pref. made of non-metallic material, partic. polyethylene or laminated glass fibre. Used in industrial prodn. of yeasts, bacteria, algae of glucide or hydrocarbon base, etc., partic. for the mfr. of foodstuffs or additives for fodder. The auxiliary contacting zone improves mfg. efficiency to make the plant economically attractive for industrial scale prodn.
