Abstract
1410797 Growing algae and purifying water BIO-KINETICS Inc 6 Dec 1972 [6 Dec 1971] 56382/72 Heading C1C [Also in Division C6] A method of growing unicellular and/or filament-form proteinaceous algae and simultaneously purifying biodegradable waste material comprises aerating and agitating an aqueous admixture of algae and waste material, the waste material providing nitrogen and phosphorus nutrients, circulating the admixture, exposing the admixture during circulation to light capable of inducing photosynthesis and then subjecting the admixture to a significantly longer period of darkness, these latter steps being repeated for several cycles to effect growth of an algae product and consumption of the waste in the presence of carbon dioxide (formed during aeration; additional CO 2 may be added). Sewage wastes may be used as nutrients. Apparatus for use in the process comprises a tank with a base, a first and second side wall, and two end walls, and being open at the top for exposure to light, the first side wall being in the form of a section of a parabolic curve, injector means disposed in the base opposite the first side wall, horizontal baffles in the upper portion of the tank, and means for injecting fluid toward the first side wall to impel fluid to move up this wall and to flow over the baffles providing the exposure to light, and to flow below providing the subjection to darkness for a much longer period. Clean water and an algae product high in protein may thus be produced in a batch or continuous system, in the presence of added air and/or carbon dioxide as required to help the growth of aerobic bacteria or the algae respectively.
