[Also in Division C7] A method of making sculptures and like articles comprises applying a support medium to a frame structure, at least the external surface of the support medium being constituted by an interlacing of fine strands, contouring the support medium and applying molten material to at least a portion of the external surface, to which it becomes attached on solidification. The support medium is preferably of steel wool and copper, aluminium, brass or other metal or alloy is poured or sprayed on to it. Alternatively it may be coated with a plastics material by spraying. The support medium may be applied to a lattice or mesh secured to the frame and in the manufacture of low relief articles, it may be removed from the solidified material, in which case the ends of the strands remain embedded in the solidified material. A lampshade is made by using a support medium having an outer surface formed as a surface of revolution, the medium being subsequently separated from the solidified molten material. The surface of the lampshade may be continuous or pierced and the framework of the shade is added later.
