847,690. Making gratings; casting composite articles. VEREINIGTE LEICHTMETALLWERKE G.m.b.H. Dec. 19, 1957 [Dec. 20, 1956; July 5, 1957; Oct. 1, 1957], No. 39538/57. Classes 83 (1) and 83 (2). A metal article having an open-work honeycomb structure is made by continuously casting ingots with a number of heat-resistant non- metallic inserts in strip, band, or plate-form, which remain mechanically-separable from the ingot-metal and capable of disintegration under pressure so as to form in the ingot at least three equidistant parallel, staggered rows of separating zones 95, subjecting the casting to a non-cutting shaping operation such as rolling or extrusion, and mechanically separating the casting along said zones by pulling opposite sides of the casting so as to form the open-work structure. The separating elements may be of mineralwools such as slag and glass-wool, asbestos, glass &c. fibres or graphite, and networks of such materials may be used to produce a network of separating-zones. The inserts may be coated with a heat-resistant coating such as silicone, dry graphite powder, or a slurry of graphite in water. The casting may be carried out in a vacuum, or inert atmosphere, or under an inert liquid or salt melt. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 784,484 and 799,700.
