Abstract
1,168,210. Forging; making turbine blades. ROLLS-ROYCE Ltd. 17 May, 1968, No. 23596/68. Headings B3A and B3H. A die 11 for forging a flanged article 10 comprises two main die parts 16, 17 which are relatively movable in a predetermined direction towards one another, each of said main die parts having a recess 34, 24 in which is mounted a further die part 35, 25 which is slidable in its main die part in a direction transverse to the said predetermined direction, the main and further die parts being respectively provided with die surfaces for forging corresponding surfaces on opposite sides of both a main portion 12 and a flanged portion 14, 15 of the said article, and the main and further die parts having surfaces which interengage each other in such a way that when the main die parts are moved towards each other the further die parts are moved in the said transverse direction. Preferably main part 16 has a surface 54 engaging a surface 53 of further part 25, this further die part having a projection 50 with a surface 51 which engages surface 52 of further die part 35. A method of making an aerofoil-shaped blade having a blade portion 12 and an integral clapper portion 14, 15 comprises rough-forging the blade and then placing it in the die 11 to effect finish forging thereof. If re-entrant angles are to be put on the vertical faces of clappers 14, 15 or root portion 13 these may be formed after the above finish forging.
