Abstract

1,245,572. Hinges. ARTHUR SHAW MFG. Ltd. 16 Aug., 1968 [16 May, 1967], No. 22632/ 67. Heading E2F. A hinge, particularly for windows, allowing separation of the hinged members without dismantling the hinge, comprises two relatively rotatable components 1, 2 one of which includes a housing 4 wherein a boss 17 is received. The boss 17 is separable from component 2 and rotation therebetween is prevented by interengagement of a slot 7 and key 11, the latter being provided with a pair of ears 12 which engage one of two pockets 8 formed at opposite ends of the slot 7. The. boss is formed with longitudinal ribs 18 and is surrounded by a split sleeve 20, 21 having longitudinal grooves 22 each engaging a corresponding one of the ribs 18 to prevent relative rotation of the boss and sleeve. A bolt 24 extends coaxially through the housing 4 and boss 17 and is received into a tapped: hole 9 in the floor of the slot 7. The head of the bolt 24 is in abutment with a spring washer 25 which abuts the adjacent edge of the split sleeve so that screwing the bolt into the tapped hole 9 forces the sleeve 20, 21 into frictional contact with the internal surface of the housing 4 and thus increases the frictional resistance to relative rotation of the two components 1, 2. Plate 15, ring 19 and the sleeve 20, 21 are preferably made from nylon or other non-metallic material.
