Abstract

1,074,524. Frictionally controlled barrel hinges. NEILSON & BARCLAY Ltd. April 12, 1966 [Jan. 18, 1965], No. 2067/65. Heading E2F. A hinge suitable for pivotally mounting a window in its frame provides axial movement which is controlled by friction. Two housings, 1 and 2, each carrying flanges 12 on either side, which have holes 13 for bolts whereby the housings may be attached to a fixed support, and to the object for pivotable mounting, respectively, have bores 3 and 4, the housing 1 being counterbored. at opposite ends of the bore, at 5 and 6. The counterbores carry resilient washers, 7 and 8 which project above the adjacent surfaces of the housing. A pin 9 passes through both bores, and the washers, having a head at the end of housing 2, and a nut on a threaded portion thereof, at the end of housing 1. The nut is tightened to compress washer 7 between itself and the adjacent housing and washer 8 between the two housings, thus providing frictional resistance to the movement of housing 1 relative to housing 2. The pin may be encased in a non-metallic sleeve 10, within the bores, which may be of nylon, the washers may also be of nylon, or may be spring washers. The pin may have a square section portion near the head to prevent it from rotating when the nut is tightened.
