A fastening device for holding a door or other hinged panel in a closed position with respect to a surrounding structure comprises a body 10 which in use is secured to one of the panel and the surrounding structure, a spring 23 loading a bolt 14 so as to cause a nose thereof to protrude from the body to a limited extent and a catch plate which in use is secured to the other of the panel and the surrounding structure and which is shaped to receive the nose of the bolt when the panel is in its closed position with respect to the surrounding structure, the nose of the bolt being connected by a connector 18 to a stop member 26 which is mounted on the body to slide thereon but which is prevented from rotating relative thereto, the connector being formed in one piece with the nose or the stop member and screw threadedly engaged with the stop member on the nose respectively, stop means 11 formed in one piece with the body being interposed between the nose and the stop member and being apertured to give passage to the connector, the bolt being urged in the direction of increasing protrusion of the nose to an extent limited by engagement of the stop member with the stop means by said spring which is interposed between and engages the nose and the stop means, the arrangement being such that the bolt is rotatable within and relative to the body to vary the effective length of the connector between the nose of the bolt and the stop member and thus to vary the extent of protrusion of said nose from the body. In the construction shown the stop means 11 is a wall of the body and the connector 18 is a shank which extends from the nose 15 of the bolt and the free end portion of which is screw threaded to receive the stop member 26 which, as shown, is a nut. The stop member 26 is contained in a cavity 21 the shape of which prevents rotation of the stop member. In the construction shown the forward end portion of the bolt 15 is hemispherical to form the nose and this is followed by a cylindrical portion, the cylindrical portion being received in a cylindricale bore in the body so that the bolt is rotatable relative to the body to vary the extent of its protrusion. When the connector is integral with the stop member the connector and stop member are in the form of a threaded bolt the head constituting the stop member and the shank of the bolt engaging a screw thread in the portion 15 of the bolt.
