Abstract
1,244,724. Evaporators, plate type. PARKSON INDUSTRIAL EQUIPMENT CO. Ltd. 15 Nov., 1968 [17 Nov., 1967], No. 52386/67. Heading B1B. [Also in Division F4] In a plate heat exchanger, e.g. a condenser or evaporator, of the type having a stack of parallel plates 1 spaced apart by peripheral gaskets 12 to define alternate fluid flow paths respectively for a first fluid e.g. the liquid being evaporated (see arrows 23) and a second fluid e.g. a heating fluid (see arrows 24), fluid ducts 4, 4' and 8, 9 are sealingly attached to the plates. As shown the ducts are channel members of rectangular cross section open at one side and have flanges 10 which fit into L-shaped slots 11 in the edges of the plates 1a to 1f. Baffle plates 15 block the ducts 4, 4' at spaced locations to constrain the product to flow between the appropriate pairs of plates along the flow path indicated by arrows 23. Corrugated spacers (14, Fig. 3) placed in gaps formed in the gaskets 12 allow the respective heat exchange fluids to enter and leave the spaces between adjacent plates of the stack. In alternative forms (Figs. 5, 6 not shown) ducts of rectangular (Fig. 5) or arcuate (Fig. 6) are provided with cylindrical beads (18) at their free edges instead of the flanges 10, said beads fitting into circular or keyhole-shaped apertures (19) in the plates. In a simplified form (Figs. 7 and 8, not shown) the cylindrical beads (18) of each duct fit into arcuate indentations formed in the plates, the duct being sealingly held in position by external clamping means (see Fig. 8). The edges of the plates may be bent at right angles to form flanges (41, Fig. 9) between which suitably shaped gaskets (40) are fitted. In a further construction (Figs. 10-12, not shown) each plate the stack is provided with a gasketed strip-like portion (52) in the form of a loop fixed to the plate at the corner thereof by welding to define with adjacent plates a fluid duct (53).
