Abstract
1,244,382. Boring earth. WERF CONRAD EN STORK HIJSCH N.V. 24 Dec., 1968 [29 Dec., 1967 (4)], No. 61407/68. Heading E1F. Core sampling apparatus for use for example on the sea floor comprises a frame, a core tube 3 extending through the frame, a vibrator to move the tube into the soil, and core tube hoisting means on the frame. The frame comprises hollow columns 8 and 9, and support arms 19 pivoted at 20 to the base of the frame and movable by hydraulic cylinders 21 between a retracted position with the arms parallel to the columns and the extended position illustrated. The tube 3 is connected to the tube 6 of the vibrator which is so mounted in a housing 7 that the housing does not vibrate. The housing 7 has guide rollers 18 engaging the columns, and is supported and moved vertically by chains 13 and 14 extending through the columns and driven by a hydraulic motor through sprockets at the bottom of the columns. The vibrator may comprise a pair of weights eccentrically mounted on rotating shafts. Alternatively (Figure 4 not shown) each weight may be replaced by a pair of spheres of different weights and mounted by arms at adjustable distances from the axis of a shaft. A suction pump (Figure 9 not shown) may be mounted inside the top of the core tube and may comprise a housing for a ball valve allowing air to pass upwardly from the tube and a piston mounted above the housing and connected thereto by a spring, and also allowing air only to pass upwardly. In a modification the core tube extends through the vibrator and is alternately gripped by means (Figures 5-8 not shown) on the vibrator and at the foot of the column so that the tube can be held while the vibrator moves relatively thereto to feed an additional length into the ground.
