Abstract
1,244,276. Cryosurgical instrument. A. J. CROFT. 3 April, 1970 [12 May, 1969], No. 24138/69. Heading A5R. A cryosurgical instrument comprises a probe 3 cooled by the controlled evaporation of liquid nitrous oxide. The flow of N 2 O from the reservoir 19 into the heat exchanger 25 is regulated by a capillary valve 15 and a needle 5 attached to a piston 6. In operation, a pressure release valve 13 above the piston is opened causing the piston to rise until it is obstructed by stop 7. Liquid N 2 O flows into the heat exchanger where it evaporates cooling the probe to -60‹C in a few seconds. If the pressure release valve is closed, vapour passing from the reservoir through a small hole 11 in the piston equalises the pressure above and below the piston so that a spring 8 is able to close the needle valve. A temperature sensor may be attached to the heat exchanger and the operation of the pressure release valve triggered by a signal received from the sensor. In this way control of the probe temperature may be made automatic. The probe may be provided with an electric heating coil that permits rapid heating after cooling.
