627,444. Regulating liquid levels. JONES, G. O. May 9, 1947, No. 12583. [Class 123(i)] [Also in Group XXIX] The level of liquid air at low pressure, or other liquid refrigerant, etc. in a Dewar flask &c. 40 is maintained by a valve 13 which controls the liquid flow thereto through a supply tube 38 and is actuated by a tube 8 of good thermal conductivity connected to an end plate 3 of a collapsable sealed container 1, the latter being filled with a gas that condenses at the temperature of the liquid. The tube 8, which is welded to the end plate 3 at 51 and is provided within the container 1 with a communicating hole or holes 14, passes through the lower container plate 2 in a fluid-tight manner and through the top 41 of the flask 40, and it is fitted with an extension 11 of relatively low thermal conductivity which is plugged at its upper end 12 and has the valve 13 mounted at its lower end. The tube 11 and the lower part of the tube 8 are surrounded by a tube 20, also of low conductivity, which is, in effect, an extension of the supply tube 38 and is provided along its length, between the valve 13 and plug 12, with perforations 39. The arrangement is such that liquid will flow into the flask as long as its level is below the plug 12, but, when it reaches the tube 8, some of the gas in the container will be cooled and condense to cause the upper plate 3 of the latter to fall, the valve 13 moving, as a consequence, to closing position to stop the flow. Finger means 33 may be provided for cutting out the control and maintaining the valve 13 open or, alternatively, closing the valve positively.
