Abstract

1,194,959. Temperature responsive actuating elements. LANDIS & GYR A. G. Nov. 25, 1968 [Nov. 28, 1967], No. 55819/68. Heading G1D. A thermal actuator comprises an evaporator 7 with a liquid filling 18, a heater 4 surrounding the evaporator 7 and connected to a control 1, a pressure chamber 13 connected by a tube 10 to the evaporator 7 and containing a bellows 14 with an end closure 15 which is displaced on vaporization of the liquid filling 18 against the action of a return spring 17, a body 11 of material which is not wetted by the liquid filling 18, contained within the evaporator and formed with capillary cavities permanently filled with vapour, and a flow throttle in the form of a porous ceramic or metallic filter 12 or by a single flow construction disposed on the flow path of the liquid between the evaporator 7 and pressure chamber 13 to prevent too sudden a return flow of cooled liquid to the evaporator 7 giving rise to a sudden decrease of vapour pressure therein. The evaporator is cylindrical and the heater 4 extends for a greater length thereon than the interior space of the evaporator. The body of material 11 is disposed at the hottest part of the evaporator. Heat conduction along the tube 10 will cool the lower end of the evaporator 7, and if desired the heater 4 may be arranged to provide this effect e.g. by an uneven distribution of the coils of the heater around the evaporator body. A suitable material for the body 11 is polytetra fluoroethylene or a fluorinated methacrylate polymer. A mixture of water and alcohol may be used for the liquid filling 18.
