Abstract

897,130. Heat exchangers. STEWARTWARNER CORPORATION. Sept. 1, 1958 [Sept. 4, 1957], No. 28033/58. Class 64(3) A heat exchanger 28 comprises spaced apart passages 44 for a fluid to be cooled, defined by heat exchange walls 46 embedded in a mass of wetted wick material (e.g. fibreglass) in a container 30, an inlet for coolant liquid to and an outlet for vapour from said wick material which fills the space between the heat exchange walls sufficiently to prevent direct flow of liquid from the inlet to the outlet. In the form shown, the wick material is continued from the heat exchanger into a storage tank 29 attached thereto. The tank 29 contains a body 40 of cooling liquid which saturates the wick 45a in the tank and is caused by capillary attraction to flow therefrom through the wick 45 in the heat exchanger and hence to the walls 46 of the passages 44. Vapour is exhausted from the heat exchanger through a vent 38. In another form described, liquid is supplied under a controlled pressure from the reservoir to the wick 45 through a supply tube incorporating a control valve (Fig. 6, not shown). In a further alternative, storage spaces for the coolant liquid are formed in the wick material in the heat exchanger shell (Fig. 2, not shown).
