Abstract

870,269. Storing liquefied gases. GARRETT CORPORATION. Aug. 14, 1957 No. 25721/57. Class 8(2). A storage tank for low temperature liquids comprises inner and outer shells spaced apart to form a cooling passage therebetween, an inlet passage to the inner shell for passage of liquid into the inner shell, means for removing liquid from the inner shell, means for recirculating the gases evaporating from the liquid in the passage between the shells, and means for cooling the recirculated gases. In Fig. 4 the tank comprises inner and outer shells 17, 18 spaced apart by struts and the inner shell is provided with baffles 28, 29 containing apertures to reduce movement of liquid within the tank but to allow some movement. A cylindrical housing 33 contains an electrically operated pump which, when in use, changes the liquid, e.g. hydrogen, in the tank to gas during its passage through the pump and passes it through a heat exchanger unit 38 to the point of use. Gas evaporating from the inner tank passes through an outlet 69 to the space between the tanks and thence through pipe 65 to the heat exchanger unit where it is blown by a fan past tubes containing gas drawn off from the tank ; the gas is thus cooled and then returned through pipe 68 to the space between the tanks. When gas is not being withdrawn from the tank a separate supply of coolant, e.g. liquid hydrogen, may be supplied to heat exchange unit 38 through valves 41 and 56. The tank is provided with an inlet tube 24, normally closed by a cap, through which it may be filled with liquid. The construction may be modified so that the tank may be incorporated as an integral part of the fuselage of an aircraft, Figs. 7-10 (not shown). In another arrangement, Fig. 13, the tanks are provided with bulges so that the upper end of tube 115 is always above the liquid level. Tube 115 conducts evaporated gas to a disbursing plate 116 between the two tanks whence it passes round the space between the tanks and exhausts to atmosphere. The pump 109 feeds gas direct to the point of use. Specification 870,271 is referred to.
