Abstract

1353668 Spray producer M R SHOWALTER 19 April 1971 [8 April 1970] 26647/71 Heading B2F Fine droplets are formed from a spray liquid by heating pressurised liquid to a temperature at which the vapour pressure is greater than ambient pressure and then suddenly releasing the pressure by opening an orifice of a spray nozzle so that the liquid flashes, boils and breaks into droplets. Pressurised liquid from source 9 passes through valve 7 and into passage 5 within nozzle 1. Heating coils 16, 15, 14 raise the temperature of the liquid. Spring 3 holds valve-shaped pintle 2 in a position to close the spray orifice. The pressure of the liquid raises the pintle from the body of the nozzle against the spring so that a mixture of fine droplets and vapour emerges in a discshaped or conical spray pattern. In other embodiments (not shown) a solenoid may be used to vibrate the nozzle and the nozzle may be made of an elastic material.
