Abstract

1,230,079. Refrigerating. HYMATIC ENG. CO. Ltd. 27 June, 1968 [28 June, 1967; 3 May, 1968], Nos. 29785/67 and 21042/68. Heading F4H. In a Joule Thomson cooling apparatus in which gas liquefied at a Joule Thomson nozzle collects in a container in which the nozzle is located, the rate of flow through the nozzle is regulated by a temperature sensor located at least partly below the nozzle. As illustrated, gas is supplied to the nozzle 150 through a heat exchanger 132 over which vaporized liquid from the container returns. The flow area of the nozzle 150 is controlled by a needle valve 147 which is carried by a bellows 140. The space surrounding the bellows communicates with a bulb 152 containing a vapour which condenses at approximately the temperature of the Joule Thomson working fluid so that when the level of liquid in the container (not shown) reaches the bulb, the valve 147 begins to throttle the flow through the nozzle. In other embodiments, Figs. 4-8 (not shown), the valve may have a flat obturating surfaces, a needle valve may have freedom of transverse movement to allow self-centering, the sensing bulb may have a solid downward extension to form a thermal bridge between the bulb and the liquid to avoid hunting, and the bulb may operate the valve through a diaphragm rather than a bellows.
