1,241,958. Alpha-methyl styrene. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 28 Feb., 1969 [8 Dec., 1967], No. 55965/67. Heading C5E. [Also in Division C2] The heavy residues obtained after the removal of acetone and phenol by distillation from the crude reaction product obtained in the decomposition of cumene hydroperoxide and containing p-cumyl phenol, acetophenone, phenyl dimethyl carbinol, phenol, a small amount of alpha-methyl styrene and a high proportion of alpha-methyl styrene polymers is heated with magnesium sulphate to give a product comprising mainly alpha-methyl styrene and phenol. Instead of magnesium sulphate a magnesium phosphate or a magnesium alum may be used.
