Abstract

1,241,192. Retreating longwall mining. K. GREBE. 9 Dec., 1969 [12 Sept., 1968], No. 43412/68. Heading E1F. In a retreating longwall mining method mineral is removed from a longwall face 34 by an endless cutting chain 24, which extends in a plane parallel to the face to circulate about spaced apart drive and guide wheels 26, 28 that do not project into the gate roads 10, 12 to any substantial extent. Preferably the wheels 26, 28 are provided on their forward surfaces with forwardly projecting cutting tools 38 for cutting out mineral immediately ahead of the wheels. In such a method props helping to support transversely extending roof beams in a gate road are successively replaced ahead of the retreating mining apparatus by prop-supported bearer beams 58 which extend longitudinally of the gate road. A self advancing roof-supporting system is associated with the mining apparatus at the face.
