Abstract

1,238,300. Power tools. GEORGE H. HUGHES Ltd. 11 Dec., 1968 [13 Dec., 1967], No. 56744/67. Heading B3N. A power-operated screwdriver or like tool comprises a casing, consisting of a cylinder 11 and a sleeve 13, a guide chuck 16, a feed tube 17 and a fluid powered motor in a piston 23 which drives a bit 35 mounted in a bit holder 25. Movement of the piston 23 is controlled by a spool valve 31 which when operated allows fluid to enter cylinder 11 via a duct 30, thus forcing the piston along the cylinder; fluid also passes through inlet 26 to drive the motor. The guide chuck 16 releasably holds fastener members and is formed of two separate halves 18 held together by resilient rings 22. Electric power may be used, but holder 25 being rotated by an electric motor and axial movement being effected by an electromagnetic device. The tool could be adapted for automatic operation.
