Abstract

1,188,935. Blind riveting. G. K. N. SCREWS & FASTENERS Ltd. 1 Aug., 1967 [1 Sept., 1966], No. 38970/66. Addition to 1,128,442. Heading B3U. A tool for blind riveting similar to the tool of the parent ease comprises a mandrel holder 18 mounted in the body of the tool for axial and rotational movement so that the end of the mandrel drills a hole in the work into which the rivet is inserted. The holder 18 is rotated by an air motor in the handle 11. The motor rotates a shaft 13 which has a piston 14 mounted thereon so that the introduction of compressed air into spaces 24, 25 moves the holder axially. Initially a rivet 30 is threaded on the mandrel 35 which has a bit 36, the mandrel is inserted in the holder against a stop 38 and the tool moved adjacent the work, Fig. 3 (not shown). The mandrel is rotated to drill the work and the rivet forced through the hole by the end cap 5 when air is allowed into the chamber 24. The mandrel is then withdrawn by air entering the chamber 25 and deforms the rivet. The end of the mandrel snaps off and may remain in the rivet, Fig. 6 (not shown).
