Abstract
1,072,077. Power-driven screwdrivers. INGERSOLL-RAND CO. Sept. 28, 1965 [Oct. 2, 1964], No. 41275/65. Heading B3N. A power-driven screwdriver comprises a screw-holding device 10, a screwdriver bit 43, driven by a fluid-actuated power tool 11, Fig. 2, through a flexible shaft 44, and a screw feeding conduit 16. Device 10 comprises a housing 20, having a slot 23, Fig. 3 (not shown), in which a pair of spring-urged jaws (28), (29) are pivotally mounted by pins (30). An elongated bit guide 38 is located in slot 23, and fits loosely in a housing 19, so that the guide can tilt laterally, so as to move out of axial alignment with tool 11, and pass through a notch 47 in housing 20, Figs. 4 and 6 (not shown). Conduit 16 is connected to a slide valve, and is adapted to move axially relative to guide 38. In operation, a screw 50, Fig. 2, is forced along conduit 16 by pressurized fluid such as air, through an escapement, and into an entrance port 27 in head 20. Bit guide 38 is tilted by the screw, Fig. 6 (not shown), and the latter passes between the jaws (28), (29), and is held by gripping faces (35), (36), Fig. 7 (not shown). The screwdriver is moved into engagement with the work, and device 10 moves rearwardly so that bit 43 engages the screw, and the power tool 11 is rotated, to thus screw up the screw. When the screw is tight, an escapement is energized by a fluid signal, to allow another screw to be positioned for the next operation. In a modification, Fig. 9 (not shown), the bit guide is positively displaced, rather than being displaced by pressure in conduit 16. Bit guide (38Z) has a canted piston-head (60), so that when pressurized fluid passes through a line (61), the guide is against a leaf spring (62).
