Abstract

1,237,704. Rotary I. C. engines; gas turbine engines; jet propulsion plant. M. F. MUSTAPHA. March 26, 1969 [March 27, 1968], No. 14665/68. Headings F1F, F1G, F1J and F1T. An engine that may be adapted to operate as a jet engine has hollow rotary-members 1, 2 with axially-extending fins 5 and axial-flow fanblades 25, which propel air through ports 22 in housing end-plates 20, transfer ports 23 covered by dished plates 24, and passages 28 .. 31 into domes 17, 18 containing burner assemblies 19. Combustion products flow between walls 15, 16 and thence through gaps between the interdigitating fins to drive the members in opposite directions, contact between the fins being prevented by external synchronizing-gears (not shown). Shafts 3, 4 may be used for poweroutput purposes. If the shafts are not required to provide useful torque the fins need not interdigitate and said gears can be omitted. The exhaust gases pass between fins 13, 14 and may thereafter flow through a divergent-convergent duct (not shown) to produce reaction thrust. Openings may be formed in housing shieldportions 7, 8 to effect scavenging by suction. A proportion of the air in the ports 23 flows directly into spaces between the fins of the adjacent members.
