Abstract

993,288. Pressure exchangers. D. B. SPALDING. Oct. 28, 1963 [Nov. 15, 1962,] No. 43336/62. Heading F1N. At least one of the end plates 4, 5, Fig. 2 of a pressure exchanger of the cell rotor type has adjacent ports 6, 7 one of which serves as an inlet and the other as an outlet and which are connected together by ducting 10 provided with fuel injection means 13. The duct is also provided with an igniter 14 and as shown hot combustion gas from duct 10 is admitted to each cell in turn through port 6 a mixture of air and combustion gas is extracted through port 7 and high pressure combustion gas is also extracted through a port 8 which together with a fresh air inlet port in plate 5 forms a scavenging stage. In a modification plate 5 is also provided with inlet and outlets ports 6A, 7A, Fig. 3 (not shown) connected by a duct 10A having a fuel injection nozzle 13A. In a further modification a combustion gas inlet port 28 of plate 5 is of smaller area than the outlet port 29 with which it is connected by a duct 30 whilst an inlet port 26 of plate 4 is of greater area than an outlet port 25 through which passes a mixture of combustion gas and air and which is disposed before port 26 when viewed in the direction of motion of the cell rotor. Starting may be effected by an electric rotor after which the cells are self driving; the blades being curved for this purpose and reinforced by corrugated strips therebetween. The high pressure combustion gas discharged by the pressure exchanger may serve to drive turbine blades secured to the pressure exchanger shaft.
