Abstract

1,236,447. Gangways. E. BATLEY. 7 Nov., 1969 [20 Nov., 1968], No. 54983/68. Heading B7J. [Also in Division E1] A gangway comprises a mounting plate 1 securable to the stern deck of a yacht 2 so as to be rotatable in a horizontal plane, and an extensible footway structure 4 and two reaction members 5 all pivoted and rotatable about a common horizontal axis on the mounting plate 1, and a pair of hydraulic jacks 7 pivoted to ladder stiles 8 and also to the free ends of the reaction members 5, the jacks being connected to a pump 9 driven by an electric motor 10 controlled by a two-way switch 11. The jacks 7, situated one on each side of the gangway, are retracted when the yacht 2 is under way so that the footway structure 4 together with its footboards 6 hangs vertically downwards from its pivotal connection with the mounting plate 1, Fig. 3 (not shown). When the yacht 2 approaches a quayside stern first, the jacks 7 are extended to swing the footway structure 4 rearwardly and upwardly of the yacht so that the free end of the structure 4 is above the level of the quay as shown in Fig. 1 and then the jacks 7 are retracted until the free end of the footway structure 4, which is provided with castors 12, rests upon the quay, as shown in Fig. 2, further retraction of the jacks lifts the reaction members 5 up under the footway structure 4 and away from the stern of the yacht 2. In order to reduce water resistance when the yacht 2 is under way and the footway structure 4 is immersed in the water as in Fig. 3 (not shown) footboards 6 are each hinged about one of their longitudinal edges so as to open outwardly of the yacht 2 and lie in its fore and aft direction in which condition ladder rungs are exposed and said rungs can be used to board the yacht.
