In an apparatus for testing fuel injection pumps the amount of fuel injected, the engine speed and the start of the injection stroke are simultaneously checked by means of a measuring tube, rev counter and stroboscope respectively. Fuel from an injection pump enters the apparatus via a pipe (2) Fig. 2 (not shown) and is led by a duct 4 and port 5 to depress the piston 6 until a channel 10 is opened whereupon fuel passes via a groove 13 on a control slide valve 11 to an overflow. On releasing pins 12 and 32 the valve 11 moves to abut a stop 25, and the fuel travels via an annular recess 26 into a measuring tube 18. As the valve moves to abut stop 25 a pin 39 on a lever 40 pivoted at 41 follows the movement of a finger 38 on the valve; this causes a pin 43 and pawl 44 to move and the pawl engages a ratchet 48. The pawl is carried on an arm of a lever 45 pivoted at 46, the piston 6 acts on the other arm so that the ratchet is revolved at each injection stroke. After a certain number of strokes a stop 49 in the ratchet causes a lever 50 to strike the stop 25 and release the valve 11, which moves to the left and fuel is again passed to the overflow via a groove 29 and channel 30, and the inlet 27 to the measuring tube is closed. A tappet 53 strikes a stop 56a each downward movement of the piston to complete an electric circuit which includes the rev counter and stroboscope. The valve may be returned to its original position by means of the manually actuated tappet 28.
