Abstract

742,732. Reciprocating pumps. SHELLARD, I. F., AND BEER, F. H. March 16, 1954 [March 17, 1953]. No. 7295/53. Class 102(1). [Also in Group XXIX] A combined water-actuated engine and pump for pumping sewage &c., comprises engine and pump cylinders 2, 6 respectively, slidably mounting pistons 3, 5 connected by a common piston rod 4, slide-valves 8, 11 mounted on the cylinders 2, 6 and connected by a common valve rod 10, and mechanism operable after movement of the rod 4 and the pistons 3, 5 to either of two predetermined positions, depending on the direction of travel, to rapidly move the rod 10 and the slide-valves 8, 11 to reverse the engine and pump. The mechanism comprises spaced stops 20, 21 secured to the valve rod 10, coil springs 22, 23 engaging the stops, bell-crank levers 29, 30 pivotally mounted on the engine and pump frame, and an arm 26 secured to the piston rod 4. The arm 26 being engageable with the springs 22, 23 and through projecting pins 28, with the depending limbs 29b, 30b of the levers 29, 30. On movement of the rod 4 and pistons 3, 5, e.g., rightwards, the arm 26 compresses the spring 22 and holds the stop 20 against the horizontal limb 29a of the lever 29 until the pins 28 on the arm 26 engage the lever limb 29b to release the stop 20. The spring 22 then rapidly moves the rod 10 and the slide valves 8, 11 rightwards to reverse the connections to the engine and pump and the direction of movement of the pump and engine.
