Abstract
937,647. Reciprocating pumps. L. TYREE. Feb. 12, 1962, No. 5348/62. Class 102(1). A reciprocating pump comprises an intake chamber and inelt 32, a compression chamber 34 connected thereto by a passage 36, which is formed by a plunger 42 and sleeve 43 slidable therewith. The end 42V of the plunger and the lower aperture 43V in the sleeve 43 cooperates to form a valve which closes on the compression stroke. Towards the end of the compression stroke, a crosshead 28 contacts a sleeve 37 which is moved downwardly to close the inlet 32. On the return stroke, a locking sleeve 44 on the sleeve 43 is contacted by shoulders 42S on the piston rod 42 and at the end of this stroke, the sleeve 44 moves the sleeve 37 upwardly to uncover the port 32. A pivoted spring loaded lever 50, operated by a rack 37T and pinion 49, holds the sleeve 37 in position during each piston stroke. The intake port 32 may consist of a number of radially disposed ports which communicate with a manifold surrounding the cylinder 30, Fig. 5 (not shown). In an alternative method of actuating the sleeve 37, the upper end thereof is located in the crosshead housing, which is correspondingly elongated. A pin on the piston rod engages in a slot in the sleeve and, at the ends of the piston stroke, a small rotational movement is imparted to the sleeve 37 to open or close the port 32.
