Abstract

[Also in Divisions B3, B7, El] A structure comprises a member which has a lattice pattern of grooves which contain a lattice framework of structural members which comprise a non-metallic fibre reinforcement embedded in a matrix material to form a composite member. The fibre reinforcement may be of glass or carbon fibres and the matrix material may be of metal or resins, especially resins derived from (a) a synthetic fluoroelastomer, a metal oxide and a curing agent, (b) a cold setting catalysed polyester resin, (c) a mixture of epoxy resin and hardener and (d) a Friedel- Crafts type resin. The grooved member may be of wood, plastics, metal or of composite material having a fibrous reinforcement in a matrix. The structure may have a load bearing facing layer secured to it which may be of metal or a fibre reinforced resin layer. The structure may be used as a stiffener to a face layer or panel to which it is attached, e.g. the stressed skin of an aircraft structure. Fig. 1 shows a lattice grooved metal sheet 61 having grooves 65, a lattice framework of members 62 comprising carbon fibre reinforcement in a matrix of cured polyester resin in the base of the grooves 65, and a face panel 63 secured by adhesive to the sheet 61.
