Abstract

1338902 Aircraft control surface BRITISH AIRCRAFT CORP Ltd 2 Nov 1971 [6 Nov 1970] 52842/70 Heading B7W [Also in Division B5] A flying control member for an aircraft of thin wedge shaped cross-section and tapering along its length from one end to the other is produced by providing a honeycomb core 1, e.g. of phenolic resin coated nylon material, of insufficient stiffness to be used as a former, stiffening the core by bonding thereto fibre reinforced plastics layers 2, 3 and 4, e.g. of woven glass cloth reinforced epoxy resin, so that the combination is sufficiently stiff to be used as a former, bonding plates 6 and 7 provided with spigots 6a and 7a to the ends of the core, winding or wrapping around the core a resin impregnated fibrous reinforcing material, e.g. strips or tapes of carbon fibre impregnated with epoxy resin, effecting bonding by curing with the application of heat and pressure and cutting off plates 6 and 7.
