Abstract
1454385 Bearings GARLOCK Inc 7 Dec 1973 [17 Jan 1973] 56839/73 Heading F2A A bearing element has a rigid backing 12 to which is bonded a layer 14 (of less than 0À060 inch) of a solid-lubricant-free resin selected from polypropylene, polyarylene sulphide and aromatic polyimide or polyamide-imide; resins. Lubricant pockets 24 may be provided in the surface layer and the backing. The backing may be of metal or a structural resin. The backing and surface layer may include fibres which are so arranged as to provide the lubricant pockets. The element may be made by bonding a resin to a cleaned metal backing and then passing a strip thus formed though heated metal rollers having protrusions which form the lubricant pockets. Alternatively fibres may be wound or braided over a mandrel and impregnated with resin. The backing may be similarly formed by winding fibres into the surface layer, and impregnating with a suitable resin or the fibres may also be preimpregnated. The resin is then cured.
