Abstract
988,258. Ball joints. C. S. WHITE. Jan. 16, 1962 [Feb. 20, 1961; March 14, 1961], No. 1622/62. Heading E2F. [Also in Divisions B5 and F2] In a method of making a low-friction bearing comprising a low-friction organic polymer facing, a hard backing member, and a layer of hardenable material bonding the lowfriction material to the backing member, a strip of the low-friction layer is secured to a strip of the hard backing member to form a laminated strip which is then formed into the required shape. The bonding medium may be thermo-setting or thermo-plastic material. The laminated strip may be formed into a bushing by a mandrel, the ends of the strip abutting against one another. The bushing may be then placed on to a larger sizing mandrel, heat and pressure then being applied to soften the bonding layer and to close the gap. The ends of the bushing may be locked together by a tongue 40, and a groove 42 connection, Fig. 8. A bearing for a ball-joint may be made by forming the laminated strip around the ball, placing the ball 56, Fig. 10 with the strip thereon in a socket made in two parts 50, 52 which are subsequently welded together, heating the ball-joint to soften the bonding layer thus causing it to yield and form the low-friction layer to the required shape. Conveniently the laminated strip for the ball is made star-shape. The low-friction layer may comprise fibres of P.T.F.E. resins. Specification 845,547 is referred to.
