Abstract

1359228 Method of covering cores by winding C S WHITE 9 Sept 1971 [28 Sept 1970] 42144/71 Heading B8G [Also in Division F2] A bearing surface is made by winding a multiplicity of juxtaposed turns of fluorinated hydrocarbon polymers on to a bearing element, said turns having been impregnated with a bonding resin and being in a solidified yet thermoplastic state, and then treating the wound element to coalesce the resin into a continuous solidified matrix. The thread may be of polytetrafluoroethylene. The thread may be coated with a resin before being wound, the resulting winding being subjected to pressure and heat to compact the threads and cure the coating thereon. The thread may comprise a plurality of filaments that are twisted or braided together and a wire may extend along the centre of such a thread. Inter-related with the low friction filaments may be fibres of a readily bondable material. A layer of metal may be applied to the low friction material before it is wound around the core, and resin applied to the metal surface on the thread. Fig. 14 shows a bearing sleeve 42 made by this method, the sleeve 42 comprising an outer body made from bondable cord 38 and an inner and end surface made from low friction cord 32 to provide low friction surfaces on the interior and one end of the sleeve. The sleeve 42 is chamfered at 45 and the body 38 is chamfered at 46 to facilitate the insertion of the sleeve into an aperture and the insertion of a shaft within the bearing sleeve. Fig. 18 shows a ball stud having bondable cord 62 wound on to a corrugated stud portion 61 to form a truncated ball. The cord 62 is cured and low friction cords 32 are then wound thereon, compacted and cured to provide low friction truncated ball.
