Grates. - A front fitting for converting a kitchen-range grate into a barless grate, and vice versa, comprises a front grate F and a bottom grate G both pivoted upon a rod E 'which loosely connects the quadrantshaped cheeks D between which the grates are fitted. The apparatus is mounted on brackets A, which are attached by flanges to the front of the range. These brackets A have slots C, and corresponding slots are formed between projections K on the brackets A and the recessed rear edges of the cheeks D, which are attached to the brackets A by screws H and bolts J. The grate F may be supported in any desired position by inserting the pins P on its outer edge into any of the notches N, in the edges of the cheeks D, or, if an ordinary kitchen fire is desired, the grates E, F are raised, the pivot rod E rising in the slots, C, and the pins P are replaced in lugs V on the main brackets A. The outer edges of the quadrants are shielded by flanges S, and their lower edges may support a plate R<2>. The brackets A are connected by a rod L. By slackening the bolts J, the cheeks D may be swung down to the position shown in dotted lines. They may be removed, and may be replaced by smaller brackets 1, Fig. 5, with recesses N<1> for the pins P, Fig. 1. With the front grate in the position shown in Fig. 1, a rod may be inserted above it in the notches N to support a utensil over the fire. The bottom grate may be loosely supported on brackets mounted on the rod E and formed also with projections taking into the slots C. Side caps prevent the endlong displacement of the rod E.
