COOKING-STOVE.
srnoxmcnrxonformi part of Letters Patent No. 521,701, dated June 19,1894. Application 1116a April 13. 1894. Seria1No.507,370- (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern: Be it known that I, ARTHUR B. CLUNIES, of
, Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cooking-Stoves; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawlugs, forming a part of this specification, and
I0 to the reference-numerals marked thereon.
My present invention relates to improvements in stoves and particularly adapted to cooklng-stoves, and consists in a certain improved hearth or front, as will be hereinafter described and the novel features pointed out in the claims at the end of this specification.
In the drawingsz-Figure 1 is a perspective view of the front of a cooking-stove provided with myimprovements; Fig.2, a similar view showing the front or hearth turned up; Fig. 3 a longitudinal sectional view; Fig. 4, a plan vlew.
Similar reference-numerals in the several figures indicate similar parts. 2 5 The main or body portion 1 of the stove is constructed in any particular or preferred way; 2 indicating'the top of the stove; 3, the oven; 4, the fire-pot; and 5, the'ash-pit- The body of the stove is provided at'the front with an extension 6 within which the ash pan 7 is located, said extended portion being in communication with the ash-pit.
8 indicates one of the front plates of the stove and 9, the usual door communicating 3 5 with the top of the fire-pot.
The subject-matter of my present invention 1s the combined hearth and stove front, which consists of the horizontal hearth plate or portion 10 adapted to fit over the forward exten- 0 sion of the stove-body, as shown in Fig. 1, and
upon the rear end-of this plate is formed-or connected a front plateor casting 11, preferably containing the usual sliding damper l2 and at its upper end is provided with ears or I 5 trunnions 13 entering apertures formed in lugs or arms 14 formed upon or attached to the sides of the stove. The combined hearth and front when in normal position, as shown 1n Fig. 1, will cover the front and the forward extension of the ash-pit, but it vmay be turned up to-the position shown in Fig. 2 by lifting up the handle or forward extension 15 on the front end of the plate 10. To secure the parts when raised, in order that the ash-pan may be .nions of the said front'plate being permitted a slight vertical movement in the apertures 6o in the arms 14 on the stove-body, in order that the lug 16 and catch 17 may be engaged and held. It will be understood that any other suitable retaining device may be employed for this purpose.
By the above described construction, I am enabled to use a very much larger ash-pan than ordinarily and to permit more ready access to the ash-pan and under sideof the grate, and this without swinging the hearth and front to the side as has been heretofore done, as this latter construction is very objectionable, in that, when it is swung out, it is in the way and liable to be broken or injured.
It will be understood that this invention can be readily applied to heating stoves without modification of the essential parts of the invention;-'merely such adaptations as are necessary for the particular stove structure being required, as will readily occur to those skilled in the art.
, I claim as my invention- 1. The combination with the stove-body having the forwardly extending ash-pit, the grate and fire-pot, of the combined hearth and 8 5 front mounted on horizontally extending pivots and adaptedto be swung vertically to permitaccess to the' forward portion of the ashpit, substantially as described. I
2. The combination with the stove-body c havingthe forwardly extending ash-pit and the grate and fire-pot, of the combined hearth and front mounted on horizontally extending pivots and adapted to be swung vertically to permit access to the forward portion of the ash-pit, and a catch for retaining said hearth and front when raised, substantially as described.
3. The combination with the stove-body having the forwardly extending ash-pit, and loo grate and the fire-pot,of the combined hearth 10 and front pivoted loosely to the sides of the stove-body, said hearth having the securing lug, and the stationary catch on the stovebedy with which the lug on the hearth cooperates to retain the latter when swung upon its pivots, substantially as described.
5. The combination with the stove body having the forwardly extending ash-pit, and the grate, and fire-pot, of the combined hearth and front, pivoted to the stove-body on horizontally extending pivots, and the draft slide or register on the front, substantially as described.
