UNIT D STATES PATENT OFFIC CORNELIUS FULLER, OF SOMERSET, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO THE SOMERSET COOPERATIVE FOUNDRY COMPANY, OFSAME PLACE.
COOKING RANGE OR STOVE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 272,131, dated February I3, 1853.
Application filed December 11, 1882. (N model.) I
.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CORNELIUS FULLER, of Somerset, in the county of Bristol,o the State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cooking Ranges or Stoves; and I do hereby declare the same to be described in the following specification, and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure 1 is an end elevation of a cookingstove with my improved hearth applied to it,-
the front section of the hearth in such figure being shown as turned up. Fig. 2 is a side."
view of such end portion of the stove, with the 1 front hearth-section turned down. Fig. 3 is a top view, and Fig. 4; a transverse section, of
the hearth.
The nature of myinvention is defined in the claims hereinafter presented. a
In the drawings, A denotes the body of the cooking range or stove, it being provided in front of its fire-place with a duplex or sectional hearth, B, arranged as shown. This hearth is constructed in two sections, a and b. The rear section,b,is fastened by suitable means to the body of the stove, so as to project therefrom transverselyjust above the month 0 of the ashchamber beneath the gra teofthe fire-place. The section a is pivoted to the section b, so as to 0 be capable of being turned from a horizontal position, as shown in Fig. 2, up into a vertical or nearly vertical position, as represented in Fig. 1. The movable section (b, when down, rests and is supported in position in the same 5 plane with the back section by means of a narrow shelf, at, extending from such back section at and below its front edge. Such back section is furnished with a stifiening-flange,e, extending down from it in manner as shown.
The two sections have ears projecting from 0 them, as represented at ffand g g, pivotal screws h it going through the ears of one section and being screwed into those of the other. The object of having the hearth so made is to admit of the major part of it being turned up 5 ward, as occasion may require, in order to tender it more convenient for a person to see into or gain access to the ash-chamber or the grate over such.
I am aware that a stove has been patented which is provided with a front plate hinged so that it can be dropped downor turned up, so as to be in a horizontal plane, in which position it is supported by a hinged bracket. In my device the normal position is the horizon- 5 tal one, below which the plate cannot go, and it is to be turned up, as described, when the ash-chamber is to be inspected.
I claim in the range or stove- 1. The fire-place hearth composed of the two sections a. and b, provided with means of supportingtbem in the same horizontal plane with each other, and connected so as to admit of the outer one, a, being turned upward relatively to theinner one, I), substantially as and 6 for the purpose set forth.
2.-The combination of the range or stove body and a hearth plate or section permanently fastened to itjust above the month of its ash-chamber, with another hearth plate or section pivoted to the first-named plate or section, and with a shelf or means of supporting the said two sections in one plane with each other, all being substantially as set forth.
CORNELIUS FULLER.
