JOSEPH MANSFIELD, OF JEFFERSON, WISCONSIN.
IMPROVEMENT` IAN COOKING UTENSILS.
Specification forming part of Letters PatentNo.-135,4S3, dated February 4, 1873.
- To alt whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH MANSFIELD, of Jefferson, in the county of Jefferson and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gridirons, ot' which the following is Vaspeciiication:
Figure 1 is a top view, partly in section, of my improvement, and Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same on the line c c, Fig. l.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to a new case or inclosure for receiving and holding gridirons; and has for its object to permit a full control over the iron during the broilin g process to prevent the escape of all the juice from the meat that is being broiled and the entrance into the room of smoke or gases from the iire. The invention consists in the arrangement of a supporting-plate for the gridiron and in the appli cation thereto of a cover or covering attachment, whereby the gridiron is protected and the heat retained, all as hereinafter more fully described.
In the drawing, the letter A represents a plate of sheet metal or other material, made with a flange, a, all around, and with a circular opening, b, near one end, said opening being of sufficient size to titl one of the holes in the stovetop, as indicated in Fig. 2. The width of the plate is not materially exceeding the diameter of ,the opening b, but in length it is about twice said diameter, as indicated. Over that portionfof the plate A which contains the opening b is secured a cover, B, which connects, by upright plates d d, with the sides of the plate A and with the back end of the same. At the frontthat is, at e-this cover is left open, as shown in Fig. 2, and may be provided witha gate or door for closing it when desired.
When this device is to be used it is placed upon the opening of the stove in the manner indicated in Fig. 2, and the'gridiron O containing the matter t be broiled is pushed into it through the opening at e,vso that the gridiron will be over the lire. For inspection, the gridiron can be moved out and in at pleasure, and the broiling process can thereby be fully controlled and observed. The juice escaping at the sides of the meat will drop into the pan which is formed by the flanges around the plate A, and will therefore not be lost.
In experimenting with this gridiron case or holder I iind that it operates to the greatest satisfaction on slow as well as very bright fires that it prevents the escape of smoke and gases from the stove into the room, and prevents the burning of the meat, which so frequently occurs during the present method of broilin g and in every respect, therefore, is a valuable attachment. Y
The Ahandle f may be formed on the case in the position indicated, or at any. other place, for facilitating the removal of the same from the stove.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The gridiron-case, consisting of the plate'A and cover B, with the parts all connected and made substantially as herein shown and described.
v JOSEPH MANSFIELD.
