TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, LEWIS EMMONS, of Hamilton, in Butler county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cooking-Stoves; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 represents my improvement detached from the stove.
Figure represents a sectional view of the same, as placed in the fire-chamber of the stove.
The object of my invention is to furnish a removable fireplace and delectorrfor cooking-stoves of any of the usual forms of construction, whereby greater economy in the use of fuel will be attained, and at the same time the means is provided for successfully burning the refuse of fuel, such as ne chips of all descriptions, I and bark, cobs, 36o.
l In the accompanying drawing, iig. 1 represents my removable lireplace, which may be cast of iron in one piece. 'Ihe'ends, A, may be thin castings, or coutinuations of there-back B, or they may be cast in skeleton form, to serve as supports of the tire-back B. The plate which constitutes the lire-back is curvedfrom the rear edge n: to the line a, where it joins the fuel-plate C, which extends in'a horizontal plane to the front, upon which the lipse e are cast. The front portion of the fireplace, marked Il), is Aprovided with suitable openings d ci, through which the air to support the combustion of the fuel will freely pass. The liange E serves as a deiiector of the flame and caloric towards the pot-holes in the top plate of the stove.
My fireplace vmay be so placed in the fire-chamber of a stove as to rest upon the bottom of the chamber, with its rear edge a: in contact with the tire-back H of the stove, and may be readily removed, or placed within the fire-chamber through the opening in the top plate ot" a stove, whonvthe lids -and cross-bearer are removed.
L The apertures '3 3 are for the admission of air `to the burning fuel, which will be placed upon the elevated fuelplate C, and against the curved plate B. y
By the userot` my improved removable fireplace, a` class of fuel may be successfully used which, when placed in the bottomvof the lire-chamber of an ordinary cooking-stove, will only remain in a smouldering con--l dition. When the same kind of fuel, consisting of particles of wood chips, Snc., is placed upon the elevated fuel-plate C and projecting lps'e, where there'is vfree admission of air in front, as well as through the series of apertures' 3 3 in the plates B and G, the fuel will burn freely, and the flame will be brought in immediate contact with the cooking-utensils on the stove. v
When it is desired to use large pieces of wood, my removable replace can be taken out of the lire-chamber of the stove for thatpurpose- But a' much less quantity ot' fuel will be required for summeruseby the employment of my invention, because the fire will be brought into close proximity with the articles to be heated or cooked, and the combustion will be greatly promoted.
When the stove is used for baking, the fireplace may be movedforward so as to leave a space in rear ofvit, next the {ire-hack of the stove, as represented in fig. 2. By this a-rrangcment 'the heat will be allowed to come in contact with the stove-oven at the back of the fire-chamber.
The fireplace may be made only half as long as the lire-chamber of the stove,'and have flanges raised at each end, and between the delector E and fuel-plateC; and when so made the, quantity of fuel required will be less, and the heat will be directed to but o'ne of the potholes in the top plate of the stove.
It is evident thatY slight modifications in the'construction of my improved fireplace for stoves may be made without departing from the principle of the invention, the leading purpose .beingto produce a removable lireplaee, 'which will occupy a large portion of the tire-chamber of ,a cooking-stove, and will elevate the fire upon a suitably-ventilated fuel-plate and fire-back, so constructed-and arranged asto insure a free and perfect combustion `oi'viine chips and refuse particles of fuel'.
What I claim, and desire to-secure by Letters Patent, as my invention, is'
The elevated removable repl'ace for cooking-stoves, constructed and used in the manner substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand, this -9th day 'of August, A. D. 1867.
v L. EMMONS.
